Soedirman University Develops Rice for Women

Lecturers at Jendral Soedirman University, Purwokerto, have found a variety of rice with a high iron content.

“The rice is female friendly because of its high iron content,” said Suwarto, a lecturer at the university, Monday (14/6).

Suwarto said that in general, rice planted in Indonesia only contains 10 ppm of iron.

But the iron content in the still unnamed variety amounts to 20 ppm.

He said that iron deficiency is suffered by almost 50 percent of pregnant women in the world.

Meanwhile, women who are not pregnant and pre-school children, the amount is 40 percent.
